Interview with Author Jillian David
What or who inspired you to become a writer?
Short answer? To escape stress from work.
Okay, long answer. I’ve always written. Since I was 5 years old and all through school. As a matter of fact, I was an English poetry writing major in college (my parents were horrified), but also completed a pre-med major. Life, and a medical degree, and 15 years later…and finally it’s time for the writing to come back!
But yes, writing dark romance is a really good outlet for the day job.
Who is your favourite Author & what is it that really strikes you about their work?
My current favorites are J.R. Ward and Rebecca Zanetti for romance. Fantasy/sci-fi that has some romantic elements, I own every single book Anne McCaffrey and Anne Bishop have written. Also Anne McKinley. Must be something about Anne’s. Especially McKinley’s books – they are so nuanced and rich/layered. Beautifully written. The Hero and the Crown and The Blue Sword, I go back and read every few years.

What was the hardest part about writing your book?
The hardest part about writing this book? It wasn’t really the book, it was the series. See, this is the first series I had nearly all books written before the first book was published. That made the series super tight in terms of consistency, but also made me crazypants because in any given week, I’d be going back and forth between galley proofs of Book #1, then outlining Book #4, then finishing developmental edits on Book #2. But I think it was worth it. The way this series grows and gets darker and more powers emerge with each book was super fun and exciting to write!

What was the most surprising things you’ve learned in writing your book?
How much time I can find in any given day to write. Not always easy when I’m on call and waiting for someone to deliver! ☺ But guess what? There’s always >some< time available.

Do you ever experience writer’s block?
Maybe. But I never quit. If something’s not working, I’ll go do something else for a while and come back to it. Also, I outline the heck out of my books. So there’s a lot of pacing in circles and talking to myself as I work through the twists and turns of the plot. That happens well before I start writing the book. Setting things up like a detailed outline really helps avoid writer’s block.

What do you like to do when you're not writing?
I enjoy my job as a rural FP/Ob (family doctor who does obstetrics). It’s super rewarding most of the time. Yes, sometimes the insanity of oppressive regulations and insurance obstacles makes me cuckoo, but being able to make a difference in my patients’ lives is still awesome. Helping a new baby come into the world never ever gets old.
When not writing or working, hubs and I love to trail run and travel.

If Hollywood made a movie about your life, whom would you like to see play the lead role as you?
Not sure that there are a ton of short, stumpy actors that look like me. That’s probably for the best.

Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?
Keep going. Enter contests or figure out other ways to get feedback. When you think your book is ready to be submitted, DON’T DO IT. Let it sit for 2 months, run back through it, then have an editor or super trusted critique partner look at it and revise it again. Repeat this process at least 2 more times. Then maybe it’ll be ready to go. Maybe.

Writing? Not much. If folks like it, super. If my books aren’t everyone’s cup of sunshine, that’s okay. There are lots of books out there.
Medicine? Insurance/government making medical decisions for patients and consequences occur. Actually, I’ve already seen this occur and it makes me sick to my stomach.
Life? That one day I will have to stop writing.

Somehow, Mop Head managed to sneak the four of us onto the roof of the Knoxville Radisson. There, with the city lights all around us, Mop Head laid one on me. It was blissful… until I later dated other guys and realized poor ol’ Mop Head wasn’t that great of a kisser. But he was a really nice guy and it made for quite a romantic first kiss!
